Kolkata, Dec 28 (NationPress) The West Bengal Police issued a warning on Sunday about fraudulent governmental loan advertisements that exploit the name and photographs of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. These deceptive promotions have been spreading across social media platforms.
In a public advisory, the state police cautioned that individuals who fall prey to these scams risk losing significant amounts of money. Utilizing its official X handle, the West Bengal Police exposed this online fraud and shared tips on recognizing these scams, as well as steps to take if one becomes a victim.
"West Bengal Police has observed that scammers are disseminating misleading ads and social media content, falsely utilizing the name and image of Mamata Banerjee, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, to entice people with offers like: 'Instant loans', 'Loans without CIBIL score', 'Government-sanctioned financial schemes', and 'Guaranteed loans without verification'," the police stated.
The police emphasized that no such loan program has been announced, endorsed, or authorized by either the Chief Minister or the West Bengal government.
"These advertisements are entirely fraudulent and deceptive. The usage of the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s name or image is unauthorized and illegal," it added.
The advisory highlighted that fraudsters often circulate ads or reels on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp; redirect users to counterfeit apps, websites, or WhatsApp numbers; solicit personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, OTP, and bank information; demand upfront processing fees, and then vanish after receiving payments or misusing the victim's identity.
The police urged the public not to trust loan offers claiming 'No CIBIL', 'Instant approval', or 'Government-backed' on social media. They advised against clicking on suspicious links or downloading unknown loan applications, sharing OTPs, bank details, or identity documents, and emphasized the importance of verifying loan offers only through recognized banks, NBFCs, or official government websites.
Furthermore, the police warned that strict legal measures will be enforced against anyone misusing the Chief Minister’s name or image to promote such advertisements.
"Do not respond or make any payments. Report immediately to the Cyber Crime Helpline: 1930, cybercrime.gov.in, and keep screenshots, links, phone numbers, and transaction details for investigation. Legal actions will be taken against individuals involved in impersonation, fraud, cybercrime, and misuse of public authority names and images," the advisory concluded.
