Kolkata, Oct 29 (NationPress) A Customs Department officer has turned to the Calcutta High Court in pursuit of justice after allegedly facing an attack by a mob in the Sonarpur region of South 24 Parganas district, triggered by a minor traffic incident.
The officer, Pradeep Kumar, submitted a petition to the court on Wednesday, claiming that the local police have been inactive regarding his case.
Justice Suvra Ghosh allowed the petition to be heard.
In his application, Kumar requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the incident and sought court oversight of the investigation.
The altercation took place on Friday night as Kumar was heading home from work. A minor collision with a local auto-rickshaw sparked a dispute between him and the driver. Although bystanders initially diffused the situation, tensions later escalated.
The petition states that the auto driver, along with approximately 55 individuals, allegedly invaded Kumar’s home in the Sonarpur Megacity area, forcibly entering and assaulting him.
Kumar's wife and children were also reportedly harmed during the episode.
The Sonarpur police detained the auto driver and three of his accomplices, but all four received bail from the Baruipur court shortly thereafter.
Following this, the auto driver lodged a molestation charge against Kumar, claiming he had assaulted his mother.
Kumar contends that the police neglected to take adequate measures against his assailants and instead initiated a case against him based on what he describes as unfounded accusations.
In light of the event, local police officials and Trinamool Congress MLA Lovely Maitra visited the site on Tuesday evening. Police presence at Kumar’s home has been increased from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, alongside heightened night patrols. Administrative officials have guaranteed that such incidents will not happen again.
Authorities have assured that they are treating complaints from both sides seriously and are undertaking a comprehensive investigation.
