Kolkata, Sep 17 (NationPress) Following a reprimand from a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal government has allocated Rs 50 crore for the enhancement and upkeep of lower and district court facilities statewide.
During a virtual session at the court on Wednesday afternoon, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant communicated this decision to the bench comprising Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi.
In a prior hearing on September 11, the same bench expressed concerns regarding the state government's hesitance to provide adequate funding for the improvement and development of various lower and district courts. The High Court had also instructed the Chief Secretary to clarify the timeline for releasing the requisite funds at the next hearing.
During the recent hearing, the Chief Secretary updated the bench about the Rs 50 crore allocation intended for 14 infrastructure development projects for different lower and district courts.
However, the bench noted that the state government still needs to clarify its stance on funding for 53 additional similar projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure in lower and district courts.
The Chief Secretary requested an additional seven days to provide clarification to the court. The next hearing is scheduled for September 24.
The state government has faced backlash for delays in fund disbursement, which have hindered multiple infrastructure projects within courts across West Bengal, including the Calcutta High Court itself.
