Morbi, Dec 26 (NationPress) The three-day Kathiawadi–Marwadi horse exhibition and sports festival, known as the 'Kama Ashwa Show', was officially launched in the historic town of Wankaner, located in the Morbi district, by Jitu Vaghani, Gujarat's Minister for Animal Husbandry, Agriculture and Cooperation.
The inauguration was attended by Revaba Jadeja, the State Minister of State for Education, along with various esteemed guests.
This event is a collaborative effort between the state’s Animal Husbandry Department and the Kathiawadi Horse Breeders Association of Gujarat. It commemorates the legacy of former Wankaner ruler and dedicated environmentalist Digvijaysinh Zala, who founded the horse show in 1994.
Over the course of three days, the festival showcases Gujarat's rich equine heritage, particularly emphasizing the renowned Kathiawadi breed.
In his address, Minister Vaghani reaffirmed the state government's dedication to preserving and enhancing indigenous horse breeds and announced plans for a new breeding center focused on native horses.
“A clear target will be established, and efforts will be made in mission mode to boost the horse population,” he stated.
He emphasized the qualities of Kathiawadi horses, known for their bravery, calm disposition, and alertness, making them suitable for public services, including mounted police units.
To ensure animal welfare, the Minister noted that strict veterinary checks were performed prior to competitions, with blood samples taken before participation.
From over 300 entries, around 250 horses qualified to compete across various categories.
Minister Vaghani paid homage to Digvijaysinh Zala, recalling his notable contributions to environmental conservation and public service.
Revaba Jadeja remarked that horses play a vital role in India's cultural and Vedic heritage, with references in epic tales like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
“A horse is viewed as the soul companion of a warrior, and history is filled with legendary connections between great warriors and their steeds,” she added, commending government initiatives in horse breeding and care.
Rajya Sabha MP and member of the Wankaner royal family, Kesridevsinh Zala, mentioned that the valor of warriors and their sacrifices cannot be fully appreciated without acknowledging horses.
“The Asiatic lion of Gir, Gir cow, and Kathiawadi horse have bestowed a unique identity to Saurashtra on both national and global stages,” he said, declaring the 17th edition of the Kama Ashwa Show a proud moment for Morbi and Wankaner.
The event also showcased a remarkable display by the Rajkot Police Mounted Unit, alongside a best horse decoration competition.
A publication detailing information about horses was launched by the dignitaries during the ceremony.
The inaugural event saw a large turnout of public representatives, senior officials, horse breeders, and citizens, marking a vibrant start to this esteemed equine festival.
