Kolkata, Jan 17 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, wrote to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Saturday, calling for his intervention due to escalating tensions in Beldanga, located in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district. This unrest is believed to have been ignited by protests regarding the alleged murder of a migrant worker from the district in Jharkhand.
“I am deeply troubled and appalled by the persistent communal violence in Beldanga, where innocent Hindu families are suffering targeted attacks on their homes, businesses, and places of worship,” stated the Leader of the Opposition in his communication to the Governor.
In his letter, he highlighted reports of journalists, including female reporters, who faced assault while covering the unrest in Beldanga.
Furthermore, he informed the Governor of the inaction displayed by both the state and district administrations in Murshidabad, which he alleges has failed to control the violent mob that has been wreaking havoc since Friday afternoon.
“What disturbs me the most is the complete inaction of the state administration. No prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS have been enforced, and the situation is spiraling out of control. Reflecting on last year’s horrific riots in Murshidabad, which resulted in loss of life, I cannot remain silent,” he expressed.
In his correspondence to Bose, the Leader of the Opposition urged for immediate prohibitory orders and the deployment of central armed police forces (CAPF) to restore order and safeguard lives in Beldanga.
“The directive from the Calcutta High Court in 2025 explicitly calls for such interventions in similar circumstances, and this must be acted upon without delay. I implore the Governor to step in and compel the state to take decisive action,” he added.
