Kolkata, Sep 22 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly and prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figure, Suvendu Adhikari, publicly condemned the West Bengal Police on Monday for their decision to release a Trinamool Congress Councillor who was apprehended late last week with a magazine and ammunition at Kolkata Airport while attempting to board a Mumbai-bound flight.
On Sunday afternoon, Sheikh Aminul Islam, a Councillor representing the Pujali municipality in the South 24 Parganas district, was taken into custody by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. They discovered a magazine and six rounds of 7.65 cartridges concealed in his luggage.
After a preliminary interrogation, during which the Councillor failed to provide convincing explanations for possessing the cartridges and the magazine, and could not present any documentation permitting him to carry them, CISF personnel initially detained him. They subsequently transferred him to the local NSCBI airport police station on Sunday evening.
On Monday, BJP leader Adhikari issued a statement alleging that the Bidhannagar City Police, responsible for the jurisdiction of NSCBI Airport, had released Sheikh Aminul Islam without conducting a thorough investigation.
"What was Aminul Islam planning? Was he attempting to smuggle weapons across state lines? Or was he trying to hijack an aircraft? Given his close ties to certain leaders whose family members are implicated in gold smuggling, he might have thought he could evade justice while attempting to smuggle firearms! Clearly, he was right, as the Mamata Police have set him free!" the statement from the opposition leader declared.
In his remarks, Adhikari accused the Commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police, Mukesh, of deliberately allowing Aminul Islam's release under the directives of West Bengal Police Director General Rajeev Kumar, who, according to LoP Adhikari, operates under the influence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"This explains why the TMC Councillor was permitted to escape accountability for such a serious offense," LoP Adhikari's statement continued.
The Leader of the Opposition also urged CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan to release the footage documenting Aminul Islam's detention at the airport on Sunday, so that the people of West Bengal could comprehend the irresponsible conduct of the Bidhannagar Police and their underlying motives.
"I also call upon Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to intervene and request a report from the West Bengal government regarding their inaction in response to such a significant incident at an international airport," he added.
