Will Bengal SIR Hearings Conclude for 15 Lakh Voters Before February 7 Deadline?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 5 (NationPress) With a mere three days remaining until the deadline for concluding the hearing sessions regarding claims and objections related to the draft voters' list in West Bengal, it is essential to finalize hearings for approximately 15 lakh voters within this timeframe to adhere to the established timeline. The deadline for these hearing sessions is set for February 7, while the final voters' list is anticipated to be published on February 14.
Based on the current pace of daily hearings, the Election Commission of India (ECI) expresses confidence in meeting the deadline.
“At present, there are 6,500 hearing centres operational, conducting these sessions. This implies that each centre must manage about 76 hearings daily over the next three days to complete the process. This is far from an impossible task,” stated an insider from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal.
This arrangement ensures that the hearing sessions will conclude ahead of the upcoming hearing on the SIR at the Supreme Court's three-judge Bench on February 9.
West Bengal's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also likely to present her arguments before the three-judge Bench, similar to her appearance on Wednesday.
The hearing sessions for the SIR initiative in West Bengal commenced on December 27 last year. Initially slow, the process has since accelerated, aided by an increase in officials at each hearing centre, along with a proportional rise in the number of centres.
Following the final voters’ list publication on February 14, the full Bench of the ECI will visit West Bengal to assess the situation. Subsequently, the Commission will announce dates for the vital Assembly elections.
The CEO’s office has already proposed to the ECI that the election process be concluded in a maximum of two phases, contrasting with the seven to eight phases seen in previous elections in the state.
It is anticipated that the elections will wrap up by the end of April, leading to the formation of a new state Cabinet by the first week of May.
