Kolkata, Aug 11 (NationPress) The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata announced on Monday that scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected across various districts in south Bengal until Thursday. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall is predicted to persist in north Bengal due to the influence of the monsoon axis.
The meteorological office reported that the monsoon axis currently extends from Faridkot through Ludhiana, Nazibabad, Shahjahanpur, Balia, Jalpaiguri, and into east-northeast Arunachal Pradesh.
"As a result, moisture from the Bay of Bengal is creating favorable conditions for rainfall in both south and north Bengal. A warning for scattered rain accompanied by thunderstorms has been issued for several districts in south Bengal," stated a meteorological department official.
Thunderstorm alerts are set for North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Nadia districts on Tuesday. Similar forecasts apply to South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram districts on Wednesday. Gale warnings will remain in effect in these areas until Thursday.
In the meantime, light to moderate rain may sporadically affect Kolkata. The minimum temperature recorded in Kolkata on Monday was 28.4 degrees Celsius, which is 1.6 degrees above average. The maximum temperature on Sunday reached 33.6 degrees Celsius, also 1.2 degrees above normal.
Furthermore, the northern Bay of Bengal may experience turbulence for the next two days. The meteorological department has advised fishermen not to head into deep waters. Gale-force winds of 35-45 km per hour are anticipated in the northern Bay of Bengal and along the West Bengal-Odisha coast on Wednesday and Thursday, with gusts possibly reaching 55 km per hour. Consequently, the sea is expected to be rough during this period.
Heavy rain will continue to affect various districts in north Bengal over the next few days. A heavy rain warning has been issued for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts from Monday through Wednesday.
Additionally, there is a potential for heavy rainfall in North Dinajpur district on Tuesday, and in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar on Thursday. Very heavy rain is also likely in Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar over the next three days, prompting an orange warning for these areas.
