Patna, March 1 (NationPress) The Mining and Geology Department of Bihar has officially begun excavation activities in Devmalpur village, located in the Shahpur block of Bhojpur district, aiming to uncover valuable natural gas and petroleum reserves.
An official from the mining and geology department stated that the excavation has initiated in the Ganga basin following analyses of satellite data and geological studies that indicate the presence of potential oil and gas reserves.
Three years ago, the Alpha Geo Company from Hyderabad conducted soil sampling in the area, which delivered positive signs of hydrocarbons.
“As part of the excavation process, the team plans to drill to depths ranging from 3 to 6 kilometers, utilizing light explosives every 20 meters to assess geological shifts and underground mineral presence. All operations are being conducted under the guidance of a specialized team,” an official remarked.
The official also assured that landowners would receive compensation for any crops affected by the excavation.
This exploration is part of India’s broader strategy under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' Initiative, which aims to decrease reliance on imported fossil fuels and enhance homegrown energy production. Should natural gas or petroleum reserves be discovered, Shahpur may be designated a “Mining Zone”, fostering economic development, job creation, and industrial progress in the area.
It would bolster energy security for both Bihar and India, potentially establishing a new hub for oil and gas extraction. The ongoing oil & gas exploration in Bhojpur could significantly impact economic growth in the region.
