A police Sub-Inspector in Bihar's Aurangabad district has been arrested red-handed by the Vigilance Investigation Bureau (VIB) on Friday, 31 July 2026, while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹50,000 near the Panchayat Bhawan behind Risiap Police Station. The accused officer, Umesh Kumar, was the investigating officer in a local dispute case and allegedly demanded the money to remove names from an FIR and drop certain charges.

How the Trap Was Laid

The operation began with a written complaint filed in Patna by Lakshman Ram, son of Saryu Ram and a resident of Ganpat Dua under Risiap police station limits. According to the Vigilance Bureau, Lakshman Ram and his neighbours had cases registered against each other's families, and Umesh Kumar was the designated investigating officer in the matter.

Lakshman Ram alleged that the Sub-Inspector demanded ₹50,000 to remove the names of his two sons from FIR Case No. 159/26 and to drop certain charges. He further alleged that the officer threatened to add more serious charges to the case if the demanded sum was not paid.

Verification and Trap Operation

Following the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau conducted a discreet verification of the allegations. Officials confirmed that the verification established the authenticity of the alleged bribe demand, after which an FIR was registered and a trap operation was planned.

A special trap team was constituted under the leadership of Santosh Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vigilance Investigation Bureau, Patna. As per the plan, Lakshman Ram handed over the ₹50,000 to Umesh Kumar near the Panchayat Bhawan. Vigilance personnel deployed nearby in plain clothes intervened immediately and arrested the Sub-Inspector on the spot.

Legal Proceedings

Umesh Kumar has been booked under Vigilance Police Station Case No. 091/26 and brought to Patna for interrogation. After completion of necessary legal formalities, he is to be produced before the Special Court (Vigilance), Patna.

This arrest is the latest in a series of anti-corruption actions by the Bihar Vigilance Investigation Bureau targeting government officials allegedly extorting members of the public. Notably, the bureau has increasingly relied on trap operations — where complainants hand over marked currency under supervised conditions — to secure red-handed arrests that are difficult to contest in court.
