A kidnapped youth was rescued within two hours of his abduction in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, as police arrested two alleged kidnappers who had demanded a ₹50,000 ransom from the victim's family, an official confirmed on Monday, 10 August. In a separate operation, Patna Police arrested four individuals linked to a series of mobile-snatching incidents on Marine Drive (JP Ganga Path), recovering seven stolen phones.

The Muzaffarpur Kidnapping

The abduction occurred on the evening of 9 August, when the youth left home for a market errand under the jurisdiction of Jajuar Outpost in the Katra police station area. Two men on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted and abducted him. The accused then contacted the youth's father, demanding ₹50,000 as ransom, prompting the family to file a complaint and police to register Case No. 208/26 at Jajuar Outpost.

How Police Tracked the Suspects

On the instructions of the Senior Superintendent of Police, a special team was constituted and placed under the supervision of the Rural Superintendent of Police. The team was led by the East-1 Sub-Divisional Police Officer alongside the Jajuar Outpost in-charge. Using mobile surveillance, technical inputs, and human intelligence, the team located and rescued the victim within approximately two hours of the abduction.

The two arrested suspects — Manjay Kumar and Sunil Kumar, both residents of the Jajuar Outpost area — were taken into custody. Police reportedly recovered a country-made pistol, four live cartridges, the victim's mobile phone, and the motorcycle used in the crime. Interrogation revealed that Manjay Kumar carries a significant criminal record, with cases of robbery, dacoity, and Arms Act violations registered across Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, and Sitamarhi districts. Investigators are continuing to question both accused to determine whether others were involved in the kidnapping and ransom conspiracy.

Patna Mobile-Snatching Gang Busted

In a separate crackdown, Patna Police on Monday arrested four individuals in connection with mobile-snatching incidents reported from Marine Drive (JP Ganga Path) on the evening of 5 August. Three suspects — Aditya, Shiva, and Gopi, all residents of the Ramkrishna Nagar police station area — were arrested first. Information obtained during their interrogation led investigators to a fourth alleged accomplice, Rahul Kumar, who was traced and arrested from the Kankarbagh area.

Police seized seven stolen mobile phones and the motorcycle allegedly used in the 5 August incident. Station House Officer of Alamganj police station, Rahul Thakur, said the criminal histories of all four accused are being examined, and investigators are probing whether the gang was responsible for additional snatching incidents across Patna. A case has been registered under relevant legal provisions, and further investigation is underway.

Broader Pattern of Crime in Bihar

The two operations reflect a pattern of street crime and organised snatching gangs that have drawn repeated public concern in Bihar's urban and semi-urban centres. The speed of the Muzaffarpur rescue — under two hours — points to improving real-time surveillance capacity, though the recovery of a country-made weapon underscores the armed nature of such criminal networks. Authorities are working to return the recovered phones to their rightful owners, and further arrests are not ruled out.
