Bihar Opposition Voices Outrage Over Women's Employment Scheme Failures
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 25 (NationPress) Members of the opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly staged a vigorous protest on Wednesday, expressing their discontent regarding the alleged failure to implement the Chief Minister's Women’s Employment Scheme and the unfulfilled commitments made to approximately 9.4 million economically disadvantaged families identified in the caste survey.
MLAs from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and various Left parties displayed placards and chanted slogans for an extended period in the Assembly portico, accusing the government of backing out on its promises.
The opposition contended that the government had pledged Rs 2 lakh per family to aid employment, but these funds have yet to be disbursed.
It was further alleged that the 9.4 million economically underprivileged families identified through the caste survey were promised financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh per family; however, many beneficiaries have not received any help thus far.
Opposition MLAs continued their sloganeering, accusing the government of betraying both poor families and women voters who supported them during elections.
RJD MLA Ranvijay Sahu claimed the government exhibits hypocrisy regarding women's empowerment, stating, “While the government claims to empower women, Bihar has the highest rates of crimes against women. Women were assured Rs 2 lakh in employment benefits, but Chief Minister Nitish Kumar continues to let them down. Atrocities against women are escalating, and the Chief Minister remains silent,” said Sahu.
He also noted that women were allegedly given Rs 10,000 during elections to secure their votes, while the larger promise of Rs 2 lakh remains unfulfilled.
“We will not allow this matter to be overlooked,” he emphasized.
CPI(ML) MLA Sandeep Saurabh pointed out that the commitments made during the caste survey report presentation have not been honored.
He added that although the government announced Rs 2 lakh assistance for families earning less than Rs 6,000 per month, only around 40,000 families have received Rs 50,000 thus far.
Saurabh also highlighted the need for an increase in the reservation limit within Bihar.
“Many states have already expanded reservations beyond 50%. If Parliament allows it, Bihar should include it in the Ninth Schedule, similar to what Tamil Nadu has done. Yet, none of these promises are being fulfilled,” he stated.
The opposition also referenced findings from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), which raised serious concerns about the financial management of the Bihar government.
According to the CAG report, utilization certificates totaling Rs 70,877.61 crore were not submitted on time.
“If the treasury is depleted, someone must be held accountable,” Saurabh alleged. “The CAG itself indicates that there is no clear accounting of Rs 70,000 crore. Funds have been misappropriated, and excuses are being made,” he added.
This issue is expected to escalate political tensions both inside and outside the Bihar Assembly in the days ahead.
