Key Takeaways
Patna, March 16 (NationPress) In response to successive police encounters in the Saran and Patna districts, the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar announced on Monday that law enforcement is taking decisive actions against criminal activities while adhering strictly to legal protocols.
This announcement follows an encounter in Saran district on Sunday night, succeeded by another gunfire exchange on Monday morning within the Barh subdivision.
“The police forces in the affected locales responded to the situation by taking action against criminals, ensuring they operate strictly within the law,” stated DGP Vinay Kumar.
In reference to the Saran incident where five individuals perished after consuming toxic liquor, the DGP verified the presence of hazardous alcohol. He indicated that police have initiated actions against those linked to the liquor trade and have made several arrests.
Reportedly, five individuals died and 12 others fell ill after allegedly consuming contaminated liquor in various villages under the jurisdiction of Panapur Police Station and Mashrakh Police Station between March 11 and March 13.
In connection with this case, authorities apprehended Suraj Mahto, a 26-year-old from Mithwa village, who was accused of supplying the toxic alcohol and had been evading capture since the incident.
After receiving a tip-off, police tracked him down to Katihar, where he was arrested and subsequently transported to Saran for further questioning. During the investigation, the accused was taken to the Mashrakh-Panapur border area to conduct raids aimed at recovering illicit liquor stock and identifying additional members of the network.
During the raid, associates of the accused allegedly opened fire on the police team in an attempt to rescue him. Police responded in self-defense, resulting in Suraj Mahto sustaining a gunshot wound to his leg. He was later detained and provided with medical care.
In a separate incident, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and a notorious criminal, Dheeraj Singh, within the jurisdiction of Pandarak Police Station in the Barh subdivision of Patna district.
Police officials reported that multiple criminal cases have already been filed against the suspect. Investigations are currently ongoing in both incidents.
