Patna, April 26 (NationPress) A minimum of 12 individuals, including four police officers, sustained injuries during a violent confrontation between the police and villagers within the boundaries of Dhankhora police station in Katihar district, Bihar on Saturday.
The altercation began after the police apprehended a notorious liquor smuggler, Suraj Kumar, from his hometown Raipur and held him at the Dhankhora police station. Following his detention, approximately 100 villagers invaded the police station, demanding his swift release.
As tensions escalated, villagers reportedly engaged in vandalism and assaulted police personnel. In retaliation, the police discharged at least six rounds into the air to disperse the gathering.
Despite these measures, four officers were injured during the clash. Villagers accused the police of unnecessary harassment, which intensified their frustration.
The mob's intention to forcibly liberate Suraj Kumar exacerbated the standoff, resulting in disorder and violence at the station.
Authorities have since restored order. A significant police presence has been established in the region to avert further unrest.
Investigations into the incident are underway, with further actions against the offenders anticipated.
Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Sharma informed IANS that the situation is now entirely under control.
"The liquor trader remains in police custody. An inquiry will be conducted regarding this matter, and the wrongdoers will face consequences," he stated.
The SP noted that police have detained three to four individuals for questioning and are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify other participants in the violence.
"An attempt was made to liberate an accused. Those involved in the disturbance will be identified, and legal measures will follow," Sharma affirmed.
The SP reiterated the administration's dedication to enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal liquor activities.
"The district police are fully committed to upholding the liquor prohibition law, and we stand ready to take decisive action against violators," he stated.
The sale, production, and consumption of alcohol have been prohibited in Bihar since April 2016. Nevertheless, illegal trade and conflicts related to enforcement continue to emerge across various regions of the state.
