Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Dec 6 (NationPress) The Excise Department in Bihar has successfully intercepted a substantial shipment of 4,006 litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) valued at Rs 50 lakh in Gopalganj.
The illicit liquor was being transported from Uttar Pradesh, cleverly hidden under sacks of decayed potatoes, as reported by an excise official.
The vehicle involved in this operation has been seized, and a suspected smuggler has been taken into custody.
The operation was executed at the Balthari checkpost on NH-27 based on specific intelligence.
Excise Superintendent Amritesh Kumar Jha received credible information about a significant quantity of liquor being transported from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar.
In response, he assembled a special team and initiated thorough vehicle inspections at the Balthari checkpost.
During this operation, a truck loaded with decaying potatoes was flagged.
"The state of the cargo raised red flags, prompting the team to halt the truck for examination. A subsequent manual check unveiled the shocking reality—over 4,006 litres of liquor bottles were concealed beneath the potatoes," Jha stated.
According to Superintendent Jha, the seized liquor holds an estimated worth of Rs 50 lakh.
The truck driver, hailing from Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, has been apprehended.
Upon questioning, the driver disclosed that he had acquired the truck in Lucknow and was directed to deliver the cargo in Bihar.
Authorities speculate that the interrogation could provide critical insights into the smuggling network, including the supply chain and other involved parties.
The Excise Department is probing the network responsible for this illegal liquor operation, examining the intended delivery points within Bihar, and identifying additional smugglers and financiers.
Officials have assured that such operations will persist, reaffirming their commitment to rigorously enforcing the prohibition laws.
Since 2016, the sale and consumption of liquor have been entirely banned in Bihar. Nonetheless, smugglers continue to employ various methods to transport alcoholic consignments.
