Naveen Patnaik Addresses Controversy Surrounding Biju Naveen Foundation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 18 (NationPress) Amid escalating political tensions regarding the establishment of the 'Biju Naveen Inspirational Foundation', the Leader of Opposition in Odisha and president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Naveen Patnaik, clarified on Wednesday that the creation of the ‘Biju Naveen Inspirational Foundation' trust was a personal decision made in honor of Biju Patnaik. He emphasized that the foundation's primary objective is charitable in nature and is not affiliated with any political party.
Patnaik highlighted that Biju Babu was renowned for his philanthropic efforts, notably establishing the Kalinga UNESCO Award to advance science. He recalled that he and his siblings previously donated Anand Bhavan in Cuttack to the people of Odisha.
Elaborating on the foundation's establishment, Patnaik mentioned that he first traveled to Delhi before undergoing a medical procedure in Mumbai. During this time, he sought advice from senior legal and financial experts. Following their guidance, he decided to create a trust in memory of Biju Babu, initiating it with a modest fund of Rs 1 lakh from his own funds.
“This trust is completely independent of the BJD or any political entity. Its mission is focused solely on the welfare of the people of Odisha,” Patnaik asserted.
Moreover, he disclosed that he does not draw a salary from the government, dedicating himself entirely to serving the people of Odisha.
Simultaneously, during a contentious Zero Hour session in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, various BJP MLAs, including Santosh Khatua, raised serious questions regarding the foundation's formation and its financial transparency.
Khatua criticized the “mysterious” aspects surrounding the trust's registration, pointing out that while it claims to support Odisha's interests, much of its administrative groundwork seems to have been executed in Delhi, leading to significant delays in public announcements.
The legislator expressed skepticism about the foundation's leadership, noting that its president, who has officially retired from Odisha politics, allegedly holds “absolute power” over the organization.
Khatua further accused the foundation of potentially being a conduit for redirecting political funds from the BJD, suggesting that resources intended for state governance and party operations are being moved to this private trust without proper oversight.
He raised alarms that some individuals may have unwittingly signed documents for the trust's creation without being adequately informed of its bylaws or long-term goals.
Demanding a thorough investigation, the MLA insisted that the people of Odisha deserve to know the origins of the foundation's funding and the reasons behind its operations being obscured from the state's regulatory scrutiny, especially if it involves public resources.
