Kolkata, Feb 18 (NationPress) A peculiar situation has emerged during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as one of the special roll observers has uncovered a case where a Muslim youth's name was erroneously linked in "progeny mapping", indicating a Hindu senior citizen as his father.

This unusual familial connection was flagged during the "super checking" phase of the draft voters' list, which was released in December last year.

The anomaly was noted in the draft voters' list for the Panskura (Paschim) Assembly constituency in West Midnapore district, West Bengal. In this instance, a Muslim voter named Sheikh Rais Ali was listed as the son of a Hindu voter, Bhuban Chandra Bera.

According to sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, the special roll observer who discovered this case raised a critical issue regarding how the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) or the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) approved this linkage without conducting a proper background verification of both voters.

It is reported that the special roll observer intends to escalate the matter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi, allowing the poll panel to make a decision on the issue.

"While it is not impossible for a father and son to practice different religions, the emergence of such a case during the revision process warranted a comprehensive background check prior to approval. Unfortunately, that check was not conducted in this instance," stated a source within the CEO's office.

This isn't the first occurrence of bizarre family-tree data arising from "progeny mapping". Previously, there was an example of a 65-year-old voter with two sons aged 60 and 59, suggesting that he fathered them at the tender age of five.

Point of View

I find this incident highly concerning as it brings to light the necessity of rigorous checks in our electoral processes. It highlights the importance of ensuring accuracy and the potential implications of erroneous data on the electoral system. The integrity of our voter registration is paramount, and such lapses need immediate attention.
