Bhubaneswar, March 21 (NationPress) The principal opposition party in Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), has officially announced its participation in the Joint Action Committee regarding the delimitation issue, which is set to take place in Chennai on March 22.
According to a formal press release from the BJD issued on Friday, the party’s leader and former Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, has designated two prominent party figures, Dr Amar Patnaik and Sanjay Das Burma, to represent the party at the JAC.
“President of the Biju Janata Dal, Naveen Patnaik, has appointed former MP Dr Amar Patnaik and former minister Sanjay Das Burma as BJD representatives for the Joint Action Committee on Delimitation, convened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin tomorrow in Chennai,” the press statement noted.
It is important to highlight that a two-member DMK delegation, which includes former Union Minister and DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran along with Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, had met with the BJD leader on March 11 to invite him to oppose delimitation.
M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK President, has called for representatives from various political parties nationwide to unite against delimitation, which the DMK describes as a “blatant assault on federalism.”
Reports indicate that political leaders from seven states, including representatives from Odisha, Punjab, and Bengal, are expected to attend the Joint Action Committee meeting in Chennai on March 22 to deliberate on the delimitation issue.
“I warmly welcome leaders from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal, and Punjab who are joining us for the Joint Action Committee meeting on #FairDelimitation,” CM Stalin tweeted on Friday.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has also referred to the March 22 meeting as a momentous occasion for Indian federalism.
“This is a pivotal moment in our collective journey. This gathering signifies more than just a meeting — it marks the inception of a movement that will influence the future of our nation,” CM Stalin added.
Notably, southern states, particularly Tamil Nadu, express concerns about the potential reduction in parliamentary seats as a result of the delimitation process, which is slated to occur following the first Census after 2026.
