Chennai, April 2 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, has made a formal request for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address concerns about the proposed delimitation exercise.
He has proposed the meeting to include Members of Parliament from various political factions within the state.
In a message posted on the social media platform X on Wednesday, CM Stalin stated: “Hon’ble PM Thiru @NarendraModi, I have requested a meeting with you, along with MPs from multiple parties, to present our memorandum regarding the concerns related to the proposed delimitation. This follows the resolutions from the #JointActionCommittee meeting for #FairDelimitation in Chennai. As previously emphasized, we are in urgent need of your time to communicate our unified position on this pivotal issue for our populace. I await your prompt response.”
The Chief Minister had previously written to the Prime Minister on March 27, seeking an appointment.
In his correspondence, CM Stalin expressed his desire to meet with the Prime Minister alongside selected MPs from various political backgrounds to submit a formal memorandum that captures the issues discussed in recent meetings.
He highlighted that Chennai hosted the inaugural Joint Action Committee (JAC) meeting on ‘Fair Delimitation’ on March 22 -- a significant event attended by numerous Chief Ministers, Deputy Chief Ministers, and prominent political figures from all over India.
“The voices arising from our discussions transcend political affiliations, representing the concerns of citizens from varying regions who demand fair representation in our parliamentary democracy,” CM Stalin mentioned in his letter.
Stressing the importance of this matter, he added, “Given that this issue is crucial for our states and citizens, I kindly request a meeting with you to formally present the Memorandum on behalf of the Joint Action Committee.”
It is noteworthy that the March 22 JAC meeting concluded with a resolution commending Chief Minister Stalin for his leadership in spearheading a fair and transparent delimitation process aimed at protecting the political and economic interests of well-performing states.
The resolution also expressed serious concerns over the perceived lack of transparency and stakeholder engagement in the proposed delimitation initiative organized by the Union Government.
Emphasizing the democratic essence of such an exercise, the JAC underscored the necessity for inclusive discussions involving state governments, political parties, and civil society. It asserted that only a transparent and participatory approach would yield a fair outcome.
Another critical issue raised was the potential penalization of states that have effectively implemented population control measures. The JAC posited that such states should not face decreased representation in Parliament due to their success in managing population growth.
To protect these interests, the resolution urged the Union government to pursue appropriate constitutional amendments that guarantee equity in representation without disincentivizing successful governance practices.
