Chennai, Dec 5 (NationPress) In a pointed critique, Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has vehemently criticized the M.K. Stalin-led DMK government, claiming it is partaking in a systematic, ideologically motivated attack on Hindu religious rights. This assertion follows the uproar over the lighting of the traditional Karthigai Deepam at the Thiruparankundram hilltop.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has intervened on two occasions, mandating that the long-standing Deepam ceremony be honored atop the sacred hill adjacent to the Thiruparankundram Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple.
According to the BJP, the temple administration, along with the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department, is allegedly acting under the directives of the state government, intentionally disregarding the court orders while filing appeals that have been dismissed by the Division Bench.
As per reports, when the Bench ordered CISF protection to ensure compliance, police forces purportedly obstructed the access to the hill, hindering devotees from proceeding and detaining Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran along with senior leader H. Raja.
The BJP accused the government of deliberately obstructing a judicial mandate and infringing upon the religious liberties enshrined in Articles 25 and 26 of the Constitution.
Prasad condemned the actions of the state government, alleging a criminal misuse of executive power aimed at stifling lawful religious observances. He indicated that the events at Thiruparankundram are indicative of a larger trend, referencing ongoing disputes over the management of the Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, previous restrictions on the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha celebrations, and controversies regarding temple administration in Chennai and other districts.
The statement further asserted that the government is weaponizing the HR&CE Department as an extra-constitutional entity to undermine Hindu rights, which constitutes institutional bias in a state where Hindus represent a significant majority.
Labeling the state’s actions as blatant contempt of court, the BJP cautioned that every instance of non-compliance, every arrest, and every administrative action will be documented for potential future legal and constitutional review.
The party reaffirmed that despite the current blockage, the traditional flame of Thiruparankundram “will be lit again,” asserting that those accountable for obstructing the ritual will ultimately face justice, both legally and electorally in 2026. The statement concluded with a strong commitment to “safeguarding religious rights and the spiritual heritage of Tamil Nadu.”
