BJP Backs Trinamool's Proposal for Direct Flights from Kolkata to Europe

Kolkata, Dec 5 (NationPress) In an unusual occurrence within the West Bengal Assembly, the Opposition BJP extended its support to a motion proposed by the ruling Trinamool Congress on the ninth day of the winter session.
The motion, presented by West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, focused on reinstating direct flights from Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata to various European nations, which had their services halted for some time.
While endorsing the motion, the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, stated that the necessary clearance from the Union government for these direct flight operations is already in place.
“Kolkata is already included under the World Air Services Agreement and Open Sky Agreement. Therefore, a new approval from the Union government is not mandatory. I urge the state government to engage in discussions with all relevant parties. The state should also seek an extension for the international airport in Kolkata. Should any obstacles arise, we, as the BJP’s legislative team, will address the issue with the Union government and communicate with the appropriate Union Minister. We unequivocally support the motion,” the LoP asserted.
He further mentioned that the extension of the international airport is encountering challenges due to the presence of a Mazar in the area. He suggested that state Cabinet ministers such as Firhad Hakim or Siddiqulla Chowdhury should take the lead in relocating the structure.
“The state government must work on eliminating these infrastructure impediments,” Adhikari emphasized.
Chandrima Bhattacharya also expressed gratitude towards the LoP for his supportive stance.
