Bhubaneswar, Jan 13 (NationPress) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Odisha and the primary opposition Biju Janata Dal engaged in a heated exchange on Monday regarding the purported transformation of 'Sankha Bhawan', the BJD's headquarters in Bhubaneswar, into a dining establishment.
Senior BJP figure Jagannath Pradhan criticized the BJD for allegedly operating a restaurant at its office, claiming it violates the intended use of the land leased to the party by the state.
In a statement to the press, Pradhan remarked, “I learned from media reports yesterday that the BJD headquarters has been converted into a hotel. We have never witnessed a political party receiving land meant for office operations only to establish a restaurant on it. Why has the BJD found itself in this predicament? They have constructed a lavish office using funds reportedly sourced from corporate entities. Has it become essential for the BJD, after their 24-year governance, to manage a restaurant due to a lack of donations from these corporations?”
The senior BJP official urged the state government to take decisive action against what he termed the illegal actions of the BJD. He posited that failing to address this issue could create a troubling precedent for other political parties.
Pradhan pointed to lease agreements, asserting that it explicitly states the land is for office use only, necessitating prior approval for any alternative usage.
In response to these accusations, senior BJD member Arun Sahoo advised the ruling party to prioritize governance rather than resorting to petty political tactics.
“BJD members routinely visit Sankha Bhawan to attend various party events held there almost daily. Hundreds of party activists and leaders dine in the canteen at Sankha Bhawan. Numerous government and private offices also possess their own canteens, where people are accustomed to dining,” he added.
