Kolkata, Dec 22 (NationPress) - The President of the West Bengal BJP and Rajya Sabha MP, Samik Bhattacharya, has initiated a public interest litigation (PIL) at the Calcutta High Court on Monday, urging the execution of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, a significant initiative by the Union government, within the state.
The BJP leader's filing emphasizes that the Ayushman Bharat scheme remains unimplemented in West Bengal, as the state government has refrained from allowing it, citing the existence of its own health insurance program, Swasthya Sathi.
On accepting the petition, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen stated that the case would be heard later this week.
Following the filing, Bhattacharya remarked to reporters that the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme would have greatly benefited the general populace, particularly those from marginalized communities in West Bengal. He criticized the state government for denying these individuals the advantages of the scheme.
“The state government has deprived the marginalized people of this opportunity by obstructing the scheme’s implementation. This administration shows little concern for those from disadvantaged sections of society,” he asserted.
The Mamata Banerjee-led government has consistently opposed the execution of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal, citing excessive restrictions. Instead, they promote the Swasthya Sathi scheme, which is accessible to all.
Conversely, the Union government has contended that while Ayushman Bharat can be utilized anywhere across India, the Swasthya Sathi scheme is confined solely to West Bengal.
However, Bhattacharya disputes this stance, asserting that such issues could be resolved through discussions at the bureaucratic level between the Union and state governments.
“Whenever a welfare initiative is rolled out, there are associated protocols. Specific individuals are entrusted with the creation of laws and the execution of government-announced projects. Yet, in this instance, the state government has continually rejected the scheme. Consequently, we have no recourse but to approach the court,” Bhattacharya concluded.
