New Delhi, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation, Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, labeled a recent meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as both unethical and illegal, emphasizing that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has forfeited its majority in the civic assembly.
Singh challenged Mayor Mahesh Khichi to convene a Municipal Corporation House meeting on March 1 to validate his majority.
The Delhi BJP denounced the MCD House meeting held on Tuesday as illegal, claiming it violated the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1952 (DMC Act, 1952) as orchestrated by the Mayor.
“This session occurred without the Commissioner and the full opposition council members present. Only around 25 to 30 councillors from the AAP attended,” asserted Singh.
Over the past months, numerous AAP councillors have defected to the BJP, casting doubt on AAP's majority within the corporation, he noted.
Singh criticized the ruling AAP for its unwillingness to establish the municipal standing committee over the past two years, which he claims has stalled the development and administrative operations of the civic body.
He pointed out that the agenda for Tuesday's municipal corporation meeting included several long-standing issues that have been postponed multiple times and could significantly affect the MCD financially — issues that necessitate thorough investigation.
“We call upon the Hon’ble Commissioner to step in and declare the House meeting conducted on February 26 as illegal and null,” Singh stated, adding that he has submitted a letter of protest to the Commissioner regarding this situation.
Previously, Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva criticized the AAP for failing to adhere to the procedures of elected bodies.
It was claimed that during the past decade, the former Arvind Kejriwal administration and the then Speaker of the Assembly manipulated the rules governing Assembly operations to such an extent that it became a platform exclusively for the ruling party.
Most MLAs in the previous Delhi Assembly were unable to exercise their rights pertaining to the House.
“Forget about opposition BJP MLAs — even the ruling AAP’s MLAs were not given the chance to raise issues pertinent to Delhi, reducing the Assembly to mere political commentary,” he remarked.
