New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) As India nears the 50th anniversary of the Emergency that was enforced in 1975, prominent leaders of the BJP have ramped up their critiques of the Congress period, highlighting the stark differences with the governance style of the current Modi administration.
During a public event in Cuttack, Odisha, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan referenced the landmark ruling by the Allahabad High Court, which found former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral misconduct, triggering political unrest and the subsequent declaration of Emergency.
“Those who violated the Constitution during that era were brought to justice by Justice Sinha of the Allahabad High Court, who delivered a momentous judgment,” Pradhan stated.
“Indira Gandhi breached the law and was ousted from her position. To avert this, she dismantled the entire system and the Constitution, leading to the Emergency,” he remarked.
Pradhan’s remarks coincide with the BJP's plans for a nationwide initiative to commemorate the 50 years since June 25, 1975, when civil rights were curtailed, and democratic institutions fell under the direct authority of the central government. The party is also celebrating the 11 successful years of the Modi administration.
BJP MP Hukmdev Narayan Yadav conveyed to IANS, “The BJP wave is grounded in the trust of the people... and will be remembered even 200 years from now.”
In a jab at Congress, he commented, “Unlike those preoccupied with guarding their family legacy, Prime Minister Modi has tirelessly worked over the last 11 years. Such accomplishments did not occur under British or Congress governance. The impressive Chenab Bridge has been constructed, and even Farooq Abdullah has acknowledged PM Modi’s contributions.”
“This era could serve as a model for governance—encompassing culture, nationalism, and economic reform. Those who are concerned about their dynastic future are now making misleading statements,” his statement asserted.
As political tensions escalate, the BJP appears poised to utilize the anniversary of the Emergency to sharpen its narrative surrounding dynastic politics versus a governance model focused on development.
