Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 15 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP has sharply criticized Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, claiming he has made “anti-Constitutional” comments aimed at undermining Prime Minister Narendra Modi and obstructing the implementation of 33 percent reservation for women in legislative bodies.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad issued a strong statement asserting that Stalin’s recent address, which threatened statewide protests over possible delimitation adjustments, poses a risk to national coherence and jeopardizes the constitutional structure of India.
Prasad insisted that the Chief Minister must promptly retract what he termed “threatening remarks”.
The BJP representative noted that Stalin’s statements, including threats of Tamil Nadu “coming to a standstill” to draw national attention, represent a resurgence of the Dravidian party’s previous separatist rhetoric.
He brought up the DMK’s historical aspiration for a separate “Dravida Nadu” and argued that such narratives harm the unity and integrity of the nation.
Prasad further accused the Chief Minister of practicing divisive politics based on language, caste, and regional identity for electoral advantage, especially with the approaching Assembly elections.
He contended that this rhetoric aims to instill fear concerning the Centre’s policies, notably the proposed delimitation process.
Emphasizing the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023, which mandates 33 percent reservation for women in both Parliament and State Assemblies, Prasad hailed it as a pivotal reform designed to empower women nationwide.
He alleged that Stalin’s opposition to the delimitation procedures could hinder or delay the implementation of this reservation.
The BJP spokesperson also reassured that the Centre has committed to ensuring that any delimitation will safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests and will not negatively impact the state’s representation.
He criticized the Chief Minister for framing the Centre as an adversary and for “spreading panic” among citizens.
Prasad acknowledged the Prime Minister’s role in propelling significant development projects in Tamil Nadu, asserting that initiatives worth several lakh crore rupees have been approved for the state’s advancement.
In conclusion, Prasad reaffirmed that the women’s reservation policy will proceed regardless of political resistance, insisting that “no amount of threats or warnings” can deter what he termed a constitutional obligation.
