Gujarat local body polls 2025: BJP leads with 900+ seats across civic, rural bodies
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Early trends in Gujarat's local body elections on Tuesday, 28 April 2025 showed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking a commanding lead across urban and rural bodies, according to official updates available till 11 am IST. Counting, which began earlier in the day at designated centres across the state, follows polling held on 26 April across 15 Municipal Corporations, 84 Municipalities, 34 District Panchayats, and 260 Taluka Panchayats.
Early Seat Tally Across Bodies
In Municipal Corporations, the BJP had won 51 seats so far, of which 41 were secured uncontested. In Municipalities (nagarpalikas), the BJP led with 428 seats, while the Indian National Congress (Congress) had secured 25 seats and others accounted for seven.
In District Panchayats, the BJP had won 64 seats against Congress's one, with no seats reported for others at that stage. In Taluka Panchayats, the BJP was ahead with 357 seats, followed by Congress with 24 and others with 14.
Municipality-Level Results
Among individual municipalities where results were declared or nearing completion, the BJP swept all 24 seats in Gandevi Municipality, with 22 candidates elected unopposed and two through polling. In Patdi Municipality, the party again secured all 24 seats — 16 uncontested and eight through polling — with counting completed.
In Viramgam Municipality, the BJP crossed the halfway mark in the 36-member body, with 13 candidates elected unopposed and six more seats won as counting continued. In Dholka Municipality, the party moved well past the halfway mark, winning 11 seats unopposed and 10 through polling, with results declared for 21 of 36 seats and counting still underway.
Voter Turnout Across Tiers
Voter turnout varied across tiers: 49.02% in Municipal Corporations, 59.50% in Municipalities, 61.69% in District Panchayats, and 62.38% in Taluka Panchayats. By-elections to municipal seats recorded a turnout of 55.38%. The higher participation in rural tiers suggests strong grassroots mobilisation, a pattern that has historically favoured the BJP in Gujarat.
Political Significance
The elections were contested by the BJP, Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Independents. Analysts view the results as a critical indicator of grassroots political strength in a state the BJP has governed continuously since 1995. This is the first major round of local body elections in Gujarat since the party's landslide victory in the 2022 state assembly elections, where it won 156 of 182 seats.
Counting is continuing across centres, with further results expected throughout the day, according to officials of the State Election Commission.
