Karnataka BJP files complaint over knives sent to Opposition leader's home
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Saturday, 7 November filed a formal complaint with Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, seeking action against those allegedly responsible for sending knives and sharp weapons to the residence of Legislative Council Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy. The complaint follows reports that the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC), allegedly arranged the delivery of knives and cutters to Narayanaswamy's home through online platforms, reportedly as a protest against his remarks at a BJP event.
What Allegedly Happened
According to Narayanaswamy, the weapons were delivered to his residence at Ministers' Quarters in Bengaluru via the Blinkit delivery platform. He alleged that two NSUI workers were present near the location at the time and that repeated calls and WhatsApp messages were received in connection with the deliveries. Narayanaswamy linked the incident to remarks he made during a BJP protest in Kolar, where he said the Congress party would be 'chopped into pieces' if it continued to create anarchy — remarks he maintained had been misinterpreted as a call for violence.
BJP Delegation Meets Police Commissioner
A BJP delegation, led by Assembly Opposition Leader R. Ashoka, met the Police Commissioner and demanded registration of a case, characterising the alleged delivery as an attempt to threaten and intimidate the opposition. Ashoka called for an attempt-to-murder case to be registered against those responsible. He alleged that the Congress government had failed to maintain law and order, noting that Narayanaswamy's residence is located in a sensitive area close to the Police Commissioner's office and the residences of judges and ministers.
'Criminals carry machetes and long knives, but here Congress workers themselves have allegedly sent weapons to the house of Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy,' Ashoka said. He alleged that the incident reflected a failure of the police machinery and directly targeted Home Minister Priyank Kharge, accusing Congress leaders and workers of taking the law into their own hands.
Ashoka demanded that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar act against those involved and warned that the BJP would launch a poster campaign describing the administration as a 'government of goons' if no action was taken.
BJP State President Condemns the Incident
BJP state president B.Y. Vijayendra strongly condemned the alleged delivery of knives, accusing the Congress government of promoting a 'goonda culture.' He alleged that the ruling party was frustrated following its recent setbacks in the Legislative Council election and claimed the incident reflected the Congress government's 'arrogance and misuse of power.'
Vijayendra called on Chief Minister Shivakumar, KPCC President B.K. Hariprasad, and Home Minister Kharge to publicly condemn the alleged act. He also broadened his criticism to Karnataka's finances, alleging that the state treasury was depleted, development funds were inadequate, and corruption had crossed all limits, demanding the government release a white paper on the state's finances.
Opposition Leader's Response
'Sending knives and sharp weapons will not silence us. We will not be afraid and will continue to speak the truth,' Narayanaswamy said, addressing reporters. He said he would file a formal complaint and urged the police to take suo motu action. He held the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and KPCC leadership politically responsible for the alleged intimidation.
What Comes Next
Bengaluru Police are yet to officially announce any arrests or confirm the registration of a case. The incident is likely to escalate political tensions in Karnataka, particularly ahead of a broader BJP campaign targeting the Congress government. The NSUI and the Congress have not yet issued an official response to the BJP's allegations.
