Is the Bengal BJP Seeking Calcutta HC's Intervention for Polling Booth Security?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under the leadership of President and Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, has taken a significant step by submitting a public interest litigation to a division bench presided over by Chief Justice Sujoy Paul of the Calcutta High Court. This litigation aims to secure adequate safety measures at all polling booths for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled later this year.
“For years, peaceful voting in West Bengal has been a rarity. The circumstances within the polling booths are widely known among the populace. Voter intimidation on election day persists, even with the presence of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). Instances of web cameras being disabled and CAPF personnel being barred from polling rooms are not uncommon. Furthermore, polling agents from opposition parties often face harassment. Therefore, I have filed this public interest litigation to ensure comprehensive security at all polling booths this time,” Bhattacharya expressed during a media briefing.
He highlighted a previous incident where Meena Devi Purohit, BJP’s candidate from Jorasanko Assembly in Kolkata and a current Councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was physically assaulted allegedly by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress on election day during the 2021 Assembly polls.
During his address, Bhattacharya also noted that even amidst the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in West Bengal, booth-level officers (BLOs) are facing continuous intimidation from Trinamool activists, compelling them to operate under the ruling party's influence.
“Despite such pressures, the BLOs have been performing commendably. The Trinamool Congress appears to be sensing a threat due to this, which raises the likelihood of increased violence as the elections approach,” Bhattacharya added.
