Article 370 abrogation true tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee: BJP chief Nitin Nabin
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin on Tuesday, 23 June paid floral tributes to Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the party headquarters in New Delhi, marking the leader's 73rd martyrdom day. Nabin declared that the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the 'true tribute' to the BJP ideologue's vision and ultimate sacrifice.
Key Developments at BJP Headquarters
Nabin was joined at the commemoration by BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh and senior party leader Vasundhara Raje. The tribute programme was held to mark the death anniversary of Dr Mookerjee, widely regarded as one of the founding figures of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political forerunner of the BJP.
Addressing those gathered, Nabin said: 'I pay my respectful tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 73rd martyrdom day. He was a fierce nationalist, a great thinker, and the first Industry Minister of this country. The dream he envisioned and the sacrifice he made, that sacrifice is now being realized before us. The abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is, I believe, a true tribute to Syama Prasad Mookerjee.'
What Leaders Said About Mookerjee's Legacy
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also paid homage, underlining Dr Mookerjee's role in shaping post-Independence India. 'Today, we have gathered to pay our respects to Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee. He contributed to building a new India after independence and worked for the rights and welfare of the poor and common people. It is because of his efforts that Jammu and Kashmir has become an integral part and pride of India,' Pathak said.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra paid floral tributes and planted saplings earlier in the day. Gupta described Dr Mookerjee as the ideological seed from which the BJP grew: 'Today is a day to remember the noble soul who sowed the seed of the BJP, which has now grown into a mighty banyan tree. That personality was an era in himself; we are merely a fraction of it. He was an entire book, while we are just a word.'
Gupta further noted that Dr Mookerjee had resigned his ministerial position at the Centre to dedicate himself entirely to the cause of national unity and integrity.
BJP's Nationwide Observance
BJP leaders across the country observed the martyrdom day by laying floral tributes and recalling Dr Mookerjee's contributions to nation-building. This comes amid the party's continued effort to reinforce its ideological lineage ahead of a politically active calendar year, with the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 remaining one of the BJP's most cited legislative achievements.
Who Was Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Dr Mookerjee served as India's first Industry Minister in the post-Independence cabinet before resigning over policy differences. He went on to found the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which eventually merged into the BJP. He died in detention in June 1953 in Srinagar, under circumstances that his supporters have long described as politically motivated — a narrative that the BJP continues to invoke in its foundational identity. The 73rd anniversary of his death renews calls within the party to formally recognise him as a martyr at the national level.
