BJP President Nitin Nabin leads tributes to Syama Prasad Mookerjee on martyrdom day
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Nabin on Tuesday, 23 June led senior party leaders in paying tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his martyrdom anniversary. Events held across New Delhi marked the occasion with a workers' conference and a seminar on Mookerjee's life and contributions.
Seminar Highlights Mookerjee's Legacy
The seminar, organised by the Karol Bagh District BJP, was addressed by Nitin Nabin, who traced Mookerjee's political journey — including his decision to resign from the Union Cabinet in the national interest and subsequently establish the Jana Sangh. Nabin also highlighted Mookerjee's movement to ensure Kashmir remained an integral part of India, describing his death as a supreme sacrifice for the nation.
Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra and BJP Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj also addressed the seminar. The event was conducted by District BJP President Virendra Babbar, in the presence of State BJP General Secretary Vishnu Mittal, Vice President Vinay Rawat, MLA Harish Khurana, Umang Bajaj, and former MLA Anil Bajpai.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Pays Tribute at Memorial Site
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta paid her tributes at Mookerjee's memorial site near the Delhi Gate, marking the 73rd martyrdom anniversary. She credited Mookerjee with coining the slogan 'One Nation, One Constitution' and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had fulfilled that vision by abrogating Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Gupta also noted that the BJP's first-ever Assembly poll victory in West Bengal after Independence stood as a significant tribute to Mookerjee's ideals. She described today as a day to remember 'the noble soul who sowed the seeds of the Jana Sangh' — a party that, in its current form as the BJP, she said, 'is providing shade to the entire country.'
What the Chief Minister Said
Addressing the programme, Chief Minister Gupta said: 'Syama Prasad Mookerjee's life is an inspiration for all of us. Today, we work with the spirit of "Nation First", but it was Dr. Mookerjee who inspired this thought. He was a person who could leave the position of a Minister for the interest of the nation, and his principles continue to inspire us.'
She added: 'We should pledge to take forward his message and work in the interest of the country.'
Who Was Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 after resigning from Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet over policy differences, particularly on the question of Kashmir. He died in detention in 1953 while leading a campaign against the requirement for a permit to enter Jammu and Kashmir — a cause that continues to be invoked by the BJP as foundational to its political identity. His martyrdom day is observed annually by the party with national-level events.
As the BJP marks another year of remembrance, the party's messaging ties Mookerjee's historic positions directly to its current governance record, underscoring how deeply his legacy remains embedded in the party's ideological narrative.
