Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and Shivajinagar MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Sunday, 26 July announced that the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) would mount a coordinated opposition offensive during the upcoming Karnataka Assembly session beginning 13 August, targeting the ruling Indian National Congress (Congress) government on a range of public grievances.

Key Issues the Alliance Plans to Raise

Vijayendra outlined a clutch of issues the BJP-JD(S) alliance intends to press in the Legislature. The proposed Kanakapura airport project is among the most contentious — he alleged that the initiative may be driven by real estate interests rather than genuine public need, and said all aspects of the project would face thorough scrutiny on the floor of the House.

The drought situation across Karnataka, the functioning of flagship Congress welfare schemes — including Gruha Lakshmi and Anna Bhagya — and persistent irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) are also on the opposition's agenda. Vijayendra alleged that repeated government assurances on scheme delivery and exam reforms had not produced meaningful results for beneficiaries or job-seekers.

Strategy Delayed by Deve Gowda Family Bereavement

Vijayendra acknowledged that formal consultations between the BJP and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner JD(S) had been deferred following the passing of Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. He said a final joint strategy would be confirmed after discussions with alliance leaders concluded.

NEET Row and Higher Education Portfolio

On the NEET controversy, Vijayendra alleged that certain forces had attempted to politicise the issue and foment unrest. He maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made clear that such attempts would not be tolerated, and that the Union government remained committed to a transparent investigation.

Vijayendra also welcomed the allocation of the Higher Education portfolio to senior Karnataka leader and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, describing it as a matter of pride for the state. He expressed confidence that Joshi's experience — including his tenure handling Parliamentary Affairs — would strengthen India's higher education landscape and benefit Karnataka in particular.

Attack on Congress Governance Record

In sharp remarks directed at the state government, Vijayendra alleged that the Congress had a 'long-standing association with corruption' and had consistently shielded those implicated in irregularities. He accused the ruling party of prioritising publicity around its guarantee schemes over substantive development work.

'Despite assurances of improvements in schemes such as Gruha Lakshmi, people are not receiving the expected benefits,' Vijayendra said. He added that the BJP would continue its fight to protect Karnataka's youth and seek accountability through the Legislature, arguing that the Congress government could not indefinitely deflect responsibility by citing institutional autonomy.

Mann Ki Baat Backdrop

Vijayendra's remarks came after he attended the 136th edition of Prime Minister Modi's monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat' at Sampangiramanagar in the Shivajinagar Assembly constituency, alongside party office-bearers, workers, and leaders of the Devanga community. He praised the programme for spotlighting achievers from diverse fields and noted that Modi had used the occasion to pay tribute to soldiers who fell during the Kargil War on Kargil Vijay Diwas, and to congratulate India's women's cricket team for their historic performance at Lord's, shuttler P.V. Sindhu for winning a gold medal in Japan, and Indian students for their success at the International Physics Olympiad.

With the 13 August session approaching, the shape of the BJP-JD(S) joint strategy — and how aggressively the Congress government responds — will set the tone for Karnataka's political landscape through the remainder of the year.
