Gujarat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Jagdish Vishwakarma on Monday, 4 May credited the party's electoral surge across multiple states to sustained grassroots work and the "blessings of mothers and sisters", as counting trends pointed to significant gains in West Bengal and Assam. Vishwakarma made the remarks at the BJP state headquarters in Gandhinagar, where celebrations broke out as leads widened.

Key Developments in Counting Trends

Trends showed the BJP leading in approximately 200 seats in West Bengal, comfortably ahead of the majority mark in the 294-member Assembly. In Assam, the party was leading in around 82 seats, putting it on course for a third consecutive term in the state. The West Bengal election recorded a turnout of more than 92 per cent, indicating exceptionally high participation, including among women voters.

What Vishwakarma Said

Addressing party workers and leaders, Vishwakarma said: "Today's victory is the result of the struggle of party workers, the blessings of mothers and sisters and the public, and the work of Antyodaya (upliftment of the last person) and public welfare under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."

He described the party's success "from east to west" as a reflection of public support and sustained organisational effort. He specifically thanked voters in West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, and the Umreth constituency in Gujarat, where the BJP also secured a by-election win. Referring to West Bengal, he said the result followed "years of struggle" by party workers.

Celebrations at BJP Headquarters

The mood at the Gandhinagar headquarters was festive, with drums, slogans, and the distribution of sweets. Notably, a jhalmuri stall — a nod to West Bengal's cultural identity — was set up as part of the celebrations. Senior leaders including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi were present, along with ministers, office-bearers, and party workers.

BJP's Gujarat Local Body Sweep

The state-level celebrations came on the back of a near-total sweep in Gujarat's local body elections held the previous week. The BJP won all 15 municipal corporations, 78 of 84 municipalities, 33 of 34 district panchayats, and 220 of 260 taluka panchayats. According to sources, the party secured over 90 per cent of seats in several municipal corporations, leaving many civic bodies without a recognised opposition.

The local body elections covered more than 10,000 seats and involved over 4.18 crore voters. The BJP consolidated its hold in key cities including Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, and Vadodara, while maintaining strong performance in rural local bodies — underscoring its broad-based electoral strength across Gujarat.

What Comes Next

With final results still being tallied, a confirmed majority in West Bengal would mark one of the BJP's most significant electoral milestones in the state, where it has long sought to challenge the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). A third consecutive term in Assam would further cement the party's dominance in the northeast. Party leadership is expected to hold a formal press conference once final figures are declared.
