BJP MP Reports Drug Addiction Crisis Impacting Over 10.47 Crore Individuals in India

Jaipur, Dec 4 (NationPress) During the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, MP Madan Rathore underscored the alarming increase in drug addiction among children and young individuals in the country.

Citing a recent survey, he disclosed that over 10.47 crore people in 372 districts nationwide are struggling with substance abuse, which includes 3.34 crore youth and 2.22 crore women.

Describing this trend as a deeply concerning issue, Rathore pointed out that around 1.5 crore children and adolescents aged 10-17 are engaging in substance use, including alcohol, opium, cocaine, and cannabis, severely affecting their physical, mental, and emotional development.

On August 15, 2020, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched a de-addiction awareness campaign. This initiative involves NGOs and social organizations working to raise awareness about the dangers associated with drug abuse.

Notable organizations such as Brahma Kumaris, Sant Nirankari Mandal, Art of Living, Akhil Vishwa Gayatri Parivar, Shri Ramchandra Mission, and ISKCON have participated in tackling this growing issue.

In the Rajya Sabha, Rathore urged the Central government to create an action plan for conducting monthly campaigns aimed at combating drug addiction among children. He also called for stringent actions against drug traffickers.

He stated that the drug-de-addiction campaign involves comprehensive efforts: the Narcotics Control Bureau focuses on restricting drug supply, while the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment aims for public awareness.

Additionally, the Health Department provides treatment for those affected. Grassroots organizations, including Anganwadi workers, ASHAs, ANMs, Mahila Mandals, and self-help groups, are actively contributing to the awareness initiative.

As part of these efforts, over 55,000 educational institutions, encompassing schools and colleges, have organized awareness programs, competitions, and sessions, involving more than 30 lakh students across the country.
