Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Anand, March 30 (NationPress) The momentum for the Umreth Assembly by-election in Gujarat is rapidly increasing, as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially declared Harshad Parmar, the son of the late MLA, as its candidate for the open seat. The party is intensifying its organizational efforts in anticipation of the upcoming polls.
This bypoll was triggered by the passing of the sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar on March 6 due to health complications, resulting in the vacancy of this crucial constituency.
Govind Parmar had held the seat since 2017 and successfully won re-election in 2022. His son, Harshad Parmar, has now been granted the party's nomination.
According to party insiders, this decision reflects “the family's popularity and the strong ties built by former MLA Govind Parmar” within the constituency.
The Election Commission has set April 23 as the polling date, with the vote count scheduled for May 4.
The Umreth constituency is home to over 2.4 lakh registered voters, and preparations are underway to establish more than 300 polling stations.
To enhance campaign efforts, the BJP has appointed former state Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja as the lead in-charge for the Umreth bypoll, alongside former Anand District Panchayat president Hasmukh Patel as co-in-charge.
These appointments aim to bolster coordination and manage campaign activities effectively.
The Umreth Assembly constituency, situated in the Anand district, is one of the 182 seats within the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, forming part of the Anand Lok Sabha constituency.
This seat is unreserved and encompasses areas from both Umreth and Anand talukas.
Local electoral analysis indicates that the Thakor-Kshatriya community constitutes approximately 54 percent of the electorate, making it a pivotal voting bloc in this by-election.
While the BJP has solidified its candidate and campaign strategy, the Congress party has yet to announce its nominee but is conducting internal discussions regarding candidate selection.
