New Delhi/Ahmedabad, March 15 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared a by-election for the Umreth Assembly constituency in Gujarat, prompted by the unfortunate passing of the current MLA, Govind Parmar, earlier this month.

This schedule was revealed during a press conference led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The voting for the Umreth seat is set for April 23, with the counting of the ballots scheduled for May 4.

The electoral process is expected to be finalized by May 6.

This vacancy arose due to the demise of Parmar, a two-term MLA representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Umreth seat in Anand district.

Parmar passed away on March 6 after a brief illness and was taken to the hospital, where he ultimately succumbed.

His passing resulted in the declaration of the Assembly seat as vacant.

He had been victorious from Umreth in both the 2017 and 2022 state Assembly elections as a BJP candidate.

Earlier in his political journey, he served one term as an Independent MLA and also held the agriculture portfolio in the administration led by former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

In light of the announcement, Anil Patel, the state BJP chief spokesperson, expressed the party's commitment to reclaiming the seat.

“Today, the Election Commission has made known the by-election for the Umreth Assembly constituency. Sadly, we lost our esteemed MLA and popular leader Govind Parmar, resulting in the vacancy,” he stated.

Patel noted that Parmar was dedicated to serving the community and consistently advocated for their concerns.

“In the upcoming by-election, our state and district organizations will collaborate under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and state BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma to secure victory from this seat once again,” he added.

The Election Commission has also announced by-elections for seven other Assembly constituencies nationwide.

These include Ponda in Goa, Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Rahuri and Baramati in Maharashtra, Koridang (ST) in Nagaland, and Dharmanagar in Tripura.

Voting for these constituencies, with the exception of those in Maharashtra, will occur on April 9, while the counting of votes for all eight by-elections will be conducted on May 4.

Point of View

It highlights the significance of leadership transitions in local governance. The implications of this election will resonate beyond the region, reflecting broader electoral trends and party strategies.
