BJP's Harshad Parmar wins Umreth bypoll by 30,743 votes; Gujarat CM congratulates
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Harshad Parmar won the Umreth Assembly bye-election in Anand district, Gujarat on 4 May 2025, defeating Indian National Congress (Congress) candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan by a margin of 30,743 votes. The result was declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI) after counting concluded over 23 rounds.
Key Figures and Vote Count
Harshad Parmar secured 85,500 votes, while Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan polled 54,757 votes. The contest was largely bipolar between the two parties among six candidates in the fray. Polling recorded a turnout of approximately 59 per cent.
Why the Bypoll Was Called
The bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting BJP MLA Govind Parmar, a four-term legislator who had represented the Umreth constituency. The BJP fielded his son, Harshad Parmar, as its candidate, while the Congress nominated Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan, described as a senior leader with experience in local governance. The bypoll was held on 23 April 2025.
