Harshad Parmar sworn in as MLA after BJP holds Umreth seat by 30,000 votes
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Harshad Parmar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was sworn in as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, 26 May, days after the party retained the Umreth constituency in Anand district by a commanding margin in a bypoll. The oath was administered by Speaker Shankar Chaudhary at the Assembly complex in Gandhinagar.
Swearing-In Ceremony
The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Assembly Chief Whip Balkrishna Shukla, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rushikesh Patel, and other members of the state cabinet and legislature. Parmar now formally succeeds his father as the representative of Umreth in the 182-member Gujarat House.
Bypoll Background
The Umreth bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting legislator Govind Parmar in March following illness. The BJP fielded Harshad Parmar, the late MLA's son, in what was his first major electoral contest. Polling was held on 23 April, with votes counted on 4 May.
Election Result
According to Election Commission data, Harshad Parmar secured 85,500 votes against Congress candidate Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan's 54,757 — a winning margin of more than 30,000 votes. The BJP reportedly captured nearly 59 per cent of the vote share in the constituency, which has increasingly consolidated in the party's favour since 2017.
Parmar dedicated the win to his late father and thanked voters for turning out in large numbers despite intense summer heat. 'The support reflected the goodwill earned through my father's work in the constituency over the years. People had backed me from the beginning, and I secured victory with their blessings and support by a substantial margin,' he said.
Broader Bypoll Context
The Umreth contest was one of seven Assembly by-elections held across five states. The BJP won four seats nationally in that round, with Umreth contributing to a consistent performance. Party sources noted that the BJP maintained a lead throughout the counting process, and the Anand district seat forms part of the Anand Lok Sabha constituency. This is the third consecutive bypoll in Gujarat where the ruling party has held a sitting seat without significant erosion in vote share — a pattern that underlines the BJP's organisational grip at the ground level.
