New Delhi, Feb 27 (NationPress) BJP legislator Neelam Pehalwan on Thursday advocated for the renaming of west Delhi's Najafgarh to Nahargarh during a session in the Delhi Assembly. This call was supported by two additional party MLAs who requested the renaming of Mustafabad colony in north east Delhi to Shiv Vihar and Mohammadpur village in south Delhi to Madhavpuram.
Dismissing accusations from the Opposition AAP legislators that the name changes are merely superficial, Pehalwan stated, "The AAP is a broken record that only aims to make noise. They have achieved nothing in a decade and seek to obstruct our progress. I am advocating for this renaming due to popular demand in my constituency."
She highlighted that Raja Naharsingh participated in the 1857 uprising, and following this, the rulers committed atrocities against Hindus and altered the area's name to Najafgarh. "The residents of Najafgarh significantly contributed to this revolt," she noted, asserting that a name change would honor the martyrs.
Pehalwan mentioned that the demand for renaming Najafgarh was previously brought up by Parvesh Verma, the former MP, but the political climate wasn't favorable at the time. "Now, I hope this proposal will progress without issues," she expressed.
BJP legislator Kailash Gahlot, who formerly served as an MLA from Najafgarh in the AAP administration, expressed his support for Pehalwan's suggestion of a name alteration.
"This will pay tribute to the sacrifices made by Najafgarh's residents during the revolt," said the Jat leader, emphasizing it as a widely supported demand among local residents.
Earlier, MLA Mohan Singh Bisht called for changing the name of Mustafabad to Shiv Vihar, while Anil Sharma, a legislator from R.K. Puram, proposed renaming Mohammadpur village, located near Bhikaji Cama Place on Ring Road, to Madhavpuram.
Sharma countered AAP claims that the BJP focuses solely on name changes rather than development.
"We are dedicated to development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also recognize the benefits and progress that have emerged from the renaming of Allahabad to Prayagraj and the hosting of the Maha Kumbh there," he asserted.
