What Led to the Expunging of BJP Legislators' Speeches in Bengal Assembly?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, June 19 (NationPress) The West Bengal Assembly experienced a remarkable incident on Thursday, marking the ninth day of the ongoing monsoon session. The Speaker of the house ordered the expunging of speeches made by all BJP and opposition legislators during a debate on a specific bill.
The discussion revolved around the West Bengal Sales Tax (Amendment Bill), 2025, introduced in the house the previous day. Legislators from both the ruling party and the opposition engaged in the debate one after the other.
However, when West Bengal’s Minister of State for Finance, Chandrima Bhattacharya, took the floor as the final speaker, BJP legislators exited the chamber.
Bhattacharya criticized this behavior, arguing it contravened legislative decorum for opposition members to leave during a minister's reply after participating in a debate.
“This is unacceptable. In the future, our legislators will also leave the floor when addressing the house,” Bhattacharya asserted.
Initially, Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay warned that a repeat of this behavior would result in the expunging of all BJP speeches during discussions. Nevertheless, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay insisted that the speeches be expunged immediately.
Consequently, the Speaker removed all BJP remarks, citing a specific Rule of the House.
In contrast, BJP legislators contended they had notified the House beforehand of their early departure and claimed they received copies of the Bill at the last minute, leaving insufficient time for review.
