BJP Yuva Morcha leader Bharath B.S arrested in Shivamogga rape case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka police on Monday arrested Bharath B.S., a BJP Yuva Morcha leader and practising advocate, in connection with an alleged rape case registered at the Papertown Police Station in Bhadravati, Shivamogga district. The accused had been absconding since the complaint was filed, prompting police to launch a manhunt that ended with his arrest late Sunday night from a friend's residence in Bengaluru.
How the Accused Was Traced
According to police, credible intelligence placed Bharath B.S. at a friend's house in Bengaluru after he fled following the registration of the complaint. A police team raided the location and detained him in the late hours of Sunday. He had reportedly gone into hiding immediately after the victim's complaint was lodged.
Sequence of Alleged Events
The accused had reportedly been introduced to the 23-year-old victim as her husband's friend and had established contact with her through Instagram. He is also said to have frequently visited the grocery shop run by the couple, where he allegedly harassed the woman through inappropriate physical contact on multiple occasions.
On April 11, the victim's husband had reportedly informed her that his friend Bharath would visit their home and asked her to hand over some money to him. When the woman was alone and preparing to do so, the accused allegedly raped her. He then allegedly threatened her with dire consequences, warning he would defame her if she disclosed the incident, before fleeing with the money.
On April 25, the accused allegedly returned to the couple's shop and once again attempted to sexually harass the victim.
How the Complaint Was Filed
The matter came to light when the victim's husband noticed that the accused had been blocked on Instagram while checking her phone. When he questioned her, she broke down and disclosed what had allegedly happened. The couple subsequently engaged the accused in a WhatsApp conversation using the woman's name, reportedly to document his intentions, before lodging a formal complaint at the Paper Town Police Station in Bhadravathi.
Political and Legal Angle
Bharath B.S. holds a position in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s youth wing, BJP Yuva Morcha, and is a licensed advocate. His arrest adds political sensitivity to the case. No official statement from the BJP on the arrest had been issued at the time of reporting. The case is being investigated by Shivamogga district police, and further legal proceedings are expected to follow.
