BJP wins 81% seats in Assam Assembly: MLA Manab Deka hails historic mandate
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Manab Deka, representing the Lakhimpur constituency in Assam, on Sunday declared the party's roughly 81 per cent winning rate in the 126-seat Assam Assembly a historic mandate, saying such an electoral performance is rare in India's political history. Deka made the remarks while addressing reporters after the BJP Legislature Party meeting in Guwahati.
Key Claim: An Unprecedented Winning Rate
Deka asserted that the BJP secured victories across approximately 102 of 126 Assembly constituencies, translating to a winning percentage of around 81 per cent. "Such a victory rate is very rare in India's political history," he said. The MLA attributed the result to a combination of strong booth-level management, clean governance, and development-oriented politics under the BJP's leadership in the state.
Grassroots Work Over Social Media, Says Deka
Underlining the party's organisational machinery, Deka emphasised that electoral success cannot be built on digital outreach alone. "Politics cannot run only through Facebook or social media. To succeed in politics, one has to work at the grassroots level, strengthen booth committees and remain connected with the people," he remarked. He credited every booth-level worker and party functionary for contributing to the outcome, saying the BJP's systematic functioning at the ground level was a decisive factor.
Welfare Schemes and Governance Cited as Drivers
Deka also pointed to the BJP government's focus on transparent administration, welfare schemes, and infrastructure development as key reasons for public confidence in the party. He said the NDA's landslide victory reflected collective organisational effort rather than any single factor.
Sharp Dig at Congress
Taking a swipe at the Indian National Congress (Congress), Deka questioned whether the BJP needed validation from a party that had suffered a crushing defeat. "The Congress has been reduced significantly in the Assembly. We do not need a certificate from them after such a mandate from the people," he said. The Congress's performance in the polls was described as a significant setback.
Third Consecutive Term for BJP-Led NDA
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set to form the government in Assam for a third consecutive term, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma poised to take oath for a second successive term. This outcome consolidates the BJP's grip on the state, which it has held since 2016, and signals continued momentum for the party in the northeast ahead of future electoral cycles.
