Is the BJP Facing Defeat in Bengal? Akhilesh Yadav Claims ED Raids on I-PAC Indicate Party's Desperation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Lucknow, Jan 8 (NationPress) Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav asserted on Thursday that the BJP is facing a likely defeat in the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, citing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) as a clear indicator of the ruling party's desperation.
"The BJP is severely losing Bengal. This is the first evidence!" Yadav posted on X, responding to a message that emphasized the ED's actions in West Bengal prior to the official start of the election process.
Earlier that day, the ED executed raids at I-PAC's office located in Salt Lake Sector V, a political consultancy firm allied with the Trinamool Congress since 2019. A specialized ED team from Delhi was dispatched to Kolkata to conduct the operation.
In addition, ED officials searched the residence of Pratik Jain, co-founder and director of I-PAC, where they worked for several hours. Jain plays a crucial role in the organization’s election strategy.
Following the raids, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally visited Jain’s home in central Kolkata and subsequently went to the I-PAC office to speak with staff members. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma also appeared at the residence during the operation.
The ED stated that the searches are connected to an old case in Delhi regarding alleged coal smuggling, asserting that I-PAC's name has emerged in relation to certain financial dealings tied to the case.
The agency further clarified that these search operations are unrelated to any elections, countering the Chief Minister's assertions linking the ED's actions to the upcoming Assembly elections.
This unexpected operation reportedly surprised the I-PAC team, as the organization is currently preparing for the upcoming elections in West Bengal. At the time the searches started early in the morning, only a few employees were present at the Salt Lake office, with some staff members working through the night.
Chief Minister Banerjee condemned the ED's actions, alleging political vendetta and stating that the raids were executed at the direction of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Trinamool Congress has consistently accused central agencies of being misused to target opposition leaders and organizations ahead of elections.
However, the ED insists that the raids are part of an ongoing investigation and denies any accusations of political bias.
