Hyderabad, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will independently participate in the forthcoming municipal elections in Telangana, as declared by the party’s state president N. Ramchander Rao on Tuesday.

He also mentioned that the BJP is open to receiving support from other political parties.

This announcement follows the recent declaration from the Jana Sena Party, which intends to contest in the municipal elections across Telangana.

The Jana Sena, led by Pawan Kalyan, the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and a prominent actor, is a coalition partner with the BJP in Andhra Pradesh.

Responding to inquiries from the media regarding the Jana Sena's decision, Ramchander Rao stated, “Jana Sena is a political entity. What’s wrong with them participating in the elections?”

He emphasized that the BJP has established itself as a viable alternative in Telangana and does not require any alliances to compete in the municipal elections.

This clarification comes in light of reports suggesting that the Jana Sena’s move to participate in urban local body elections, including in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), is creating some unease within the BJP.

Jana Sena plans to nominate candidates in various regions of GHMC and municipalities where they believe they have significant backing.

Leaders from Jana Sena in Telangana indicate that Pawan Kalyan is eager to broaden the party’s reach in the state by entering the municipal electoral battle.

The elections for 118 municipalities and five corporations are anticipated to take place next month, with GHMC, Khammam, and Warangal corporations voting later.

The BJP holds a robust voter base in the GHMC, having secured 46 divisions in the last elections out of the 150-member body. The party has also emerged as a strong contender in important municipalities such as Karimnagar, Nizamabad, and Warangal.

Both the Jana Sena and BJP are part of the ruling coalition led by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh.

As of now, the TDP has not confirmed whether it will be participating in the municipal elections in Telangana. Notably, it refrained from contesting in the 2023 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the first time in its history.

Point of View

The BJP's decision to contest independently in Telangana reflects its growing confidence as a political alternative in the region. This move could significantly alter the dynamics of local politics, especially in light of the Jana Sena's ambitions. The unfolding events will be crucial to observe as they may impact future coalitions and electoral strategies.
