Amaravati, April 28 (NationPress) Paka Venkata Satyanarayana has been nominated as the NDA candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election representing Andhra Pradesh.

The Central Election Committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Monday that Satyanarayana will be contesting in the election set for May 9.

Currently, Satyanarayana holds the position of chairman of the Andhra Pradesh BJP’s disciplinary committee.

During a core committee meeting, which State BJP chief D. Purandeswari attended via videoconference from Europe, Satyanarayana's candidacy was officially confirmed.

This development concludes the speculation surrounding the candidate for the Telugu Desam Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Previously, a meeting between Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded that the vacant Rajya Sabha seat would be filled by a BJP nominee.

There were rumors suggesting that K Annamalai, who recently resigned as the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit president, might be considered.

Nonetheless, the saffron party leadership chose to nominate a local leader to fill the vacancy left by V. Vijayasai Reddy's resignation from the YSR Congress Party.

Reddy's term was supposed to run until June 21, 2028, but he resigned on January 25, 2025, creating the need for this by-election.

According to the schedule from the Election Commission of India, the deadline for filing nominations is Tuesday. Scrutiny of the nominations will occur on April 30, and the last date for candidates to withdraw is May 2.

The election for the vacant seat will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 9, with vote counting slated for 5 p.m. on the same day.

However, with no other nominations expected, BJP’s Satyanarayana could potentially be elected unopposed.

The TDP-JSP-BJP alliance controls 164 MLAs in the 175-member Assembly, while the YSR Congress Party holds only 11 members.

Point of View

I recognize the significance of local leadership in national politics. The nomination of Satyanarayana reflects the BJP's commitment to maintaining strong regional representation within the NDA framework. This move could solidify the party's influence in Andhra Pradesh, especially with the upcoming elections on the horizon.
