Hyderabad, March 18 (NationPress) A sense of unease was felt near the Telangana Assembly as the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and former sarpanches attempted to organize protests on Tuesday.
The BJYM activists protested against the auction of land adjacent to Hyderabad Central University, while the sarpanches called for the settlement of their overdue bills.
With placards in hand and slogans echoing, the demonstrators attempted to move towards the Assembly but were obstructed by the police. Their demands included a call for the state government to safeguard the land of Hyderabad Central University.
In a show of force, police physically removed the protestors, placing them into police vans and taking them away.
The BJP floor leader in the Assembly, A. Maheshwar Reddy, was also taken into custody when he joined the BJYM protestors.
The police escorted the BJP leader into the Assembly premises. Subsequently, Maheshwar Reddy and other BJP MLAs conducted a dharna within the Assembly grounds, demanding the release of the detained BJYM leaders.
Former sarpanches also attempted to march towards the Assembly, pressing for the state government to address their long-standing bills.
The protestors indicated that during their terms as sarpanches, they had borrowed funds to undertake projects such as constructing graveyards, playgrounds, and dumping yards. The bills for these initiatives, initiated since 2019, remain unpaid.
Former sarpanches recalled that prior to last year's Assembly elections, Congress party leaders had assured that their issues would be resolved if they were elected.
Students from Hyderabad Central University have been protesting for several days against the planned auction of 400 acres of land at Kancha Gachibowli, adjacent to the university.
A Joint Action Committee comprising students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and workers has been formed to halt the auction.
Various student organizations have been holding protests on campus, advocating for a cessation of the land auction. They argue that the sale of this land would lead to ecological disruption and threaten the flora and fauna on campus.
The auction is being managed by the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC). The deadline for bids closed on March 15.
This land was previously allocated to IMG Academies Bharata, which failed to meet its development obligations. The state government initiated the auction process following permission from the High Court.
