Bhubaneswar, March 31 (NationPress) Rakesh Tikait, a prominent advocate for farmer rights and the National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), claimed on Tuesday that he and numerous farmer leaders faced detention by local authorities in Odisha, despite having received official approval for their visit. Tikait emphasized that the organization plans to return to further its engagement with farmers.
In an interview with IANS in Bhubaneswar, Tikait explained that the BKU delegation had scheduled a two-day visit on March 30 and March 31 to connect with farmers and gain insights into their challenges.
"Our intention was to be here for two days to engage with farmers and understand their issues. The state government had provided official authorization for the delegation. Yet, just a day prior, all the leaders were apprehended, with 14 individuals arrested and others left stranded on the streets," Tikait elaborated.
He further stated that he was also intercepted while traveling and taken to a guest house by officials from the state government.
"We (the BKU delegation) were picked up on the road and brought here, eventually being dropped off at a guest house. This is unacceptable," Tikait expressed to IANS, showing discontent with how the state administration managed the situation.
Stressing the importance of their visit, the BKU leader noted that the delegation aimed to directly interact with farmers, hear their concerns, and work on potential solutions.
"We aim to meet with farmers, listen to their grievances, and collaborate on resolving them. Officials should have engaged with them to find solutions," Tikait remarked.
He indicated that the organization would not be dissuaded by the alleged actions taken against them, promising to return with a more comprehensive plan.
"We will come back to this state. Next time, our stay will extend to at least three to four days, allowing us to visit districts and villages," Tikait stated.
He also mentioned that the BKU intends to enhance its influence in Odisha by mobilizing farmers at the grassroots level.
"Here, we will establish a movement and an organization," Tikait declared, signaling a broader initiative to unite farmers and spotlight their concerns within the state.
