Bhupen Borah's Critique of Congress: A 7-Month Wait for the Gandhi Family
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 23 (NationPress) Recently welcomed into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bhupen Borah on Monday delivered a pointed critique of Congress leadership. Drawing from personal encounters, he underscored what he termed the “significant disparity” in the operational styles of Congress and the BJP.
Borah, who officially joined the BJP on February 22, expressed frustration over his inability to secure a meeting with the Gandhi family during his lengthy seven-month tenure in the Congress, implying figures such as Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
In a striking comparison, he noted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was able to meet him in less than five minutes.
“I spent seven months trying to get an appointment with the Gandhi family but was unsuccessful. In contrast, Amit Shah met me almost instantly. This illustrates the fundamental differences between the two political parties,” Borah remarked to reporters here.
He also mentioned that it took senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi nine months to visit him, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was at his home within 24 hours of his decision to leave Congress.
“These instances clearly illustrate how leaders are regarded in varying political environments,” Borah added, asserting that the Congress party has become disconnected from both grassroots workers and senior leadership.
Addressing the opposition coalition in Assam, Borah claimed that Congress is only in a robust position in 24 Assembly constituencies. He criticized the opposition's strategy of focusing on minority-dominated areas, labeling it a “political miscalculation” that has diluted the party’s broader appeal.
Borah suggested that internal strife, lack of leader accessibility, and slow decision-making are factors contributing to the Congress party’s diminishing influence in the region.
Having served as the former president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Borah joined the BJP on Sunday in a ceremony attended by state BJP chief Dilip Saikia and other senior leaders, marking a significant political shift ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Political analysts view Borah's transition to the BJP as a substantial advantage for the ruling party, and his statements are likely to escalate the ongoing political rivalry between the BJP and Congress.
