Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) The Eastern Railway (ER) has reported that the Railway Protection Force (RPF), in collaboration with the Government Railway Police (GRP), confiscated 2.115 kg of narcotics, believed to be Brown Sugar, from a passenger aboard the Katihar-Howrah Express train at Malda Town station during Operation Narcos on Sunday evening.
If forensic analysis confirms the substance as Brown Sugar, this seizure will be valued at Rs 10 crore, marking one of the most significant recent captures made by railway security forces, as stated in an announcement on Monday.
“We received intelligence regarding the illicit transportation of contraband on a train heading to Howrah. The RPF and GRP prepared for a search operation on the 13034 Katihar-Howrah Express after its arrival at Malda Town station at 6.10 p.m. A man matching the suspect's description was located in the general compartment at the rear of the train. A thorough search of his luggage revealed the illicit items packed in five separate packets. He has since been taken into custody,” explained Kausik Mitra, CPRO of Eastern Railway.
An RPF official noted that the suspect attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by the security personnel on site. The GRP seized the suspected drugs immediately in the presence of M.K. Ray, assistant sub-inspector of the RPF Post in Malda.
A case has been filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The accused was brought before a court on Monday and was remanded into police custody. Investigators from the police and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will interrogate him to uncover the origins of the drugs.
“The Eastern Railway and RPF units are committed to combatting all forms of crime, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, theft, and robbery within railway premises and trains. Our goal is to ensure the safety of passengers through the coordinated and dedicated efforts of the RPF and GRP,” Mitra concluded.
