Srinagar, Jan 16 (NationPress) A significant haul of brown sugar was confiscated in Srinagar, leading to the arrest of two individuals, as reported by the police on Friday.

The Srinagar police successfully recovered 14 grams of the narcotic substance, identified as brown sugar, during a routine ‘Naka’ (Checkpost) operation executed by the Police Station Kralkhud yesterday. The seized contraband was found in the possession of Rayees Ahmad Dar, also known as Rayees Bandaar, and Abish Imtiyaz Bhat, both residents of the Barbarshah area of Srinagar,” a police statement revealed.

The pair was stopped during a regular check, which subsequently led to the recovery of the narcotic substance. An FIR No. 02 of 2025 has been filed under Sections 8, 21, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Police Station Kralkhud, and further investigations are underway.

The vehicle with registration number JK05D 2631, utilized by the suspects at the time of their interception, has also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation, according to the police statement.

“Initial investigations are in progress to determine the origin of the contraband and to identify any potential connections within the local narcotics supply chain. More arrests could follow as the investigation unfolds,” it added.

Both the J&K Police and security forces are conducting rigorous operations against drug smugglers, peddlers, and those involved in hawala money schemes and other illegal financial activities. It is suspected that revenues from these illicit operations may be funding terrorist activities.

The police are actively detaining drug smugglers and peddlers, and they also attach properties that have been acquired through these unlawful means after securing court orders.

Official statistics indicate a 10% rise in drug addiction in Kashmir over the past three years.

Alongside punitive measures against suppliers, the government has established de-addiction and counseling centers aimed at rehabilitating youths trapped in the cycle of drug addiction.
